Staff report
WATERVILLE -- Jil Vaughan finished with a game-high 18 points and also had a team-high nine rebounds to lead 25th-ranked Colby College to a 71-37 win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in women's basketball action Saturday.
Cony graduate Rachael Mack added 12 points, eight rebounds and a pair of steals for Colby (6-1). Jules Kowalski chipped in with seven points, eight rebounds and four blocked shots.
Rashell Saucier led the Owls (1-5) with 11 points, nine rebounds and two steals.
UNE 87, UMF 37: Madison graduate Margo Russell scored 17 points to lead the Nor'easters to the non-conference win in Farmington.
Kari Pelletier and Beth Suggs each had 15 points for UNE (6-4).
The Beavers (1-6) were led by Jillian Ross with 16 points. Mt. Abram graduate Kenni Norton added seven points.
Wentworth 74, Thomas 72: Kellie Martel made 7 of 11 shots from the 3-point line and scored a game-high 23 points, but it wasn't enough during a loss in Waterville. Martel added five assists.
Thomas (2-5) received a spark off the bench from Ashley Allen, who went 5 of 7 from the field to score 12 points. Mallorie Blakney also scored 12 points.
Kendra Kerr scored 19 points to lead Wentworth (5-3).
Men's basketball
Bowdoin 75, Colby 68: Will Hanley scored a career-high 29 points to lead the Polar Bears to the win in Brunswick.
Hanley added eight rebounds, five assists, two steals and two blocks. Maximilian Staiger added 14 points off the bench for Bowdoin (6-2).
The Mules (4-5) were led by Christian Van Loenen with 27 points and eight rebounds. Kyle Donovan added 16 points while Mike Russell chipped in with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Thomas 94, Westfield State 70: Andrew Duncanson scored 19 points to lead the Terriers in Weston, Mass.
Francisco Alicea and Stanley Greene added 14 points apiece for Thomas (4-5) while Jarrad DeVaughn chipped in 12. Mt. Blue graduate Isaiah Brathwaite had nine points and seven rebounds.
Westfield State (3-6) was led by Chris Jurkowski and Matt Devine with 13 points apiece.
Women's hockey
UMass-Boston 2, Colby 1: Despite outshooting the Beacons 38-19, the Mules fell in Boston.
The Beacons (4-5-0) scored twice in less than three minutes in the second period on goals from Alli Greenberg and Lauren Duran. Leah Hallett made 37 saves.
Colby (2-6) got a goal from Kathy Shei. First-year goalie Grace Dickinson made 17 saves.
Also Saturday: Maranacook graduate Ryan Martin scored 11 points as Keene State College defeated the University of Southern Maine 79-78 in men’s basketball.
