OUTDOORS: Toy Run set for Saturday

Morning Sentinel Staff

STAFF REPORT

Hundreds of ATVs are expected to take to a trail Saturday for the 12th annual Whistle Stop ATV Toy Run, a two-, three, and four-wheeled version of the United Bikers of Maine Toy Run.

Organized by four ATV clubs -- Western Maine (Jay), Mountain View (Mount Vernon), Brettuns Wheelers (Livermore) and Canton Trail Riders (Canton) -- the ride begins at 10 a.m. in Farmington on an old railroad bed at Oak and Mill streets.

The ride follows the former rail line to Canton and ends with a barbecue.

More information is available from Chris Currier, 441-5090, president of Mount View ATV Club.

A number of participants plan to park at McDonald's in Jay and ride from there beginning at 7:30 a.m., Currier said.

Registration for the toy run is 8-9:45 a.m. at the Farmington trail head .

The fee is $5 per person, which includes a barbecue.

Donated toys will benefit Operation Santa Claus, a program of Western Maine Community Action, which serves residents of Franklin, Androscoggin and Oxford counties.

Currier said the high-point so far has been the 569 riders and 523 ATVs that participated several years ago. "We had a beautiful day and they just rolled out of the woodwork," Currier said.

They come from all over New England and Canada.

"We've had as many as 20 states represented," he said.
