AUGUSTA -- The Skowhegan Area High School wrestling team is the favorite to win the Class A and overall titles at the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference championships, which take place today at Cony High School.
The Indians have 10 top three seeds in the 14 contest weight classes. Among them are No. 1 seed Tyler Craig (103 pounds), Kameron Doucette (132), Carter Stevens (152) and Levi Hayden (182).
Wrestling is scheduled to kick off at 9:30 a.m. Athletes from 21 high schools will compete for individual honors. Team championshp will be named in both Class A and Class B.
Camden Hills looks like the favorite in Class B, with seven wrestlers with top four seeds.
Gardiner's Daniel Del Gallo (138) and Peter Del Gallo (106) are both top seeds.
For Winslow, Aaron Lint is a No. 1 seed at 285 pounds.
The championship finals of today's meet are expected to begin no earlier than 5 p.m.
Mt. Blue coach Bob O'Connor will rest a few wrestlers due to injury, but has four strong contenders to reach the awards podium. Khalil Newbill (126) and Kevin Moore (132) are second seeds, while Danny Reed (120) is a third seed and Nick Hickey (160) a fourth seed.
For Nokomis, Rusty Wilson (182) and Jacob Nichols (285) are second seeds and John Wilson is the third seed at 170 pounds.
Cony's Chris Paradis is the No. 2 seed at 152. Erskine's Stephen Soohey (138) is a third seed, as is Mt. View's Job Mesaric (220). MCI's Dylan Dahlbergh is seeded fourth at 120 pounds.
