WALDOBORO — Kristal Smith struck out 12 and Bri Brochu drove in both runs to lead Gardiner to a 2-1 win against Medomak in a Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Class B softball game Friday.

Smith, who walked one, loaded the bases with no one out in the fifth but escaped when a run was cut down at home and she struck out the next two batters. The Tigers scored a run in the first inning on Brochu’s fielder’s choice and another in the third on Brochu’s single. Kylee Grnaholm added two hits for Gardiner (9-0).

Medomak (7-3) starter Desiree Benner strick out nine and allowed one walk while Abby McGuire singled, doubled and had the lone RBI.

Winthrop 5, Spruce Mountain 4: Krissi Doughty drove in the game-tying run, scored the game-winning run and earned the pitching win as the Ramblers won the Mountain Valley Conference game.

Winthrop (5-3) trailed 4-3 in the bottom of the eighth when Danni Pease led off with a single. Doughty followed with an RBI triple to tie the score. Kennedy Connor then grounded out, but Doughty beat the return throw home for the winning run. Doughty allowed only three hits. Pease and Lily Ouellette each had a pair of hits for the Ramblers.

Casidee Couture singled twice for Spruce Mountain (5-4).

Hall-Dale 6, Mt. Abram 3: The Bulldogs took the lead for good with three runs in the top of the fifth inning and held on for the MVC win in Salem Township.

Both batteries were sisters: Olivia and Emily Maynard for Hall-Dale (5-4), and Taylor and Kate Jordan for Mt. Abram. Olivia Maynard pitched a four-hitter, while Emily Maynard and Eva Shepherd each had two hits for the Bulldogs.

Taylor Jordan struck out five and allowed five hits for the Roadrunners (3-6).

Messalonskee 18, Mt. Ararat 6, 5 innings: Kylee Knight had a triple and two singles to lead Messalonskee to the KVAC A win in Oakland.

Courtney Veilleux added two singles and stole five bases for Messalonskee (9-1). Other repeat hittesr were Emily York with a double and two singles and Natalie Hunt with a triple and a double.

Taylor Pare had a double and two singles for Mt. Ararat (3-7).

Mt. Blue 6, Erskine 5: Caitlin Kane had three hits and Kiana Thompson two to lead the Cougars to the KVAC Class A win in South China. Alison Gauvin led Erskine (4-6) with three hits while Emma Robertson singled and doubled and Taylor Boucher singled twice. Mt. Blue is 1-9.

Madison 3, Monmouth 2: The Bulldogs stayed unbeaten with a come-from-behind MVC win in Madison.

Madison (11-0) trailed 2-1 after four innings. The Bulldogs got a run in the fifth and another in the sixth, and Emily McKenney (three-hitter, 12 strikeouts) made it stand up.

Savanna Kandiko had two hits for Madison, while Sierra LeBlanc and Cristie Vicneire each drove in a run.

Becki Bryant struck out four for Monmouth (3-5). Kylie Kemp, Sabrina Beck and Shannon Buzzell had the hits for the Mustangs.
