HIGH SCHOOL SKIING: Skiers capture conference crowns

Morning Sentinel Staff

For some Nordic skiers, the first day of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and Mountain Valley Conference championships was the first time on snow in a long time.

"(Wednesday) was the first time we've skied in two weeks," Winthrop High School Nordic coach Jay Lindsey said.

Despite the time off the trails, the Winthrop girls Nordic team put in one of the best efforts on Day 1 of the championships, which are scheduled to continue Saturday. The Ramblers placed three skiers in the top 10 of Wednesday's Nordic freestyle MVC race.

Nordic and Alpine events were held at Black Mountain in Rumford.

Winthop's Rachel Ingram was fifth (20:56.1), while Jada Choate took eighth (21:11.3) and Mary Claire Blanchard ninth (21:34.4) for the Ramblers in the Nordic race.

"They did the best they could with the snow conditions," Lindey said. "The places where the kids snowplowed, it got pretty icy. It was a good, challenging course."

Emma Houston of Mt. Abram won the MVC freestyle race with a time of 19:22.8, while Mt. Blue's Sarah Wade was the KVAC champ, finishing in 17:54.4.

On the boys side, Dustin Ramsay of Hampden was the Nordic freestyle winner, coming in at 15:07.06. Thomas Faraday of Mt. Abram won the MVC Nordic race (15:43.5).

Matt Delmar of Maranacook Community High School and Allaire Lever of Edward Little won the KVAC Giant Slalom titles.

Delmar edged his Maranacook teammate Kelby Mace for first place. Delmar's two-run time was 1 minute, 35.94 seconds, five one hundredths of a second better than Mace's time of 1:35.99.

Lever's 1:35.79 was nearly seven seconds faster than second place Lydia Morin of Camden Hills.

Elise Luce of Mt. Abram was the MVC girls champion in the GS. Alex Hartford of Spruce Mountain took the boys GS title in the MVC. Luce had a two-run time of 1:35.55, while Hartford skied a 1:42.74.
