Cony falls in opener to Edward Little

Kennebec Journal Staff

AUBURN -- Mental mistakes and sporadic play doomed the Cony High School field hockey team in a season-opening 3-1 setback Thursday to Edward Little, coach Holly Daigle said.

"We had a hard time jelling on the field," she said. "We started to pick things up at the end of the first half, though."

By then, however, it was a little too late for the Rams (1-0), who reached the Eastern A semifinals last season.

Marie Dufresne-Dixon and Emily Ranucci scored in the first seven minutes and the Red Eddies (1-0) hung on from there for the victory.

Allison Zubrod scored the lone goal for Cony with about 10 minutes left in the half. Nicole Rugan assisted on the goal, which cut the deficit to 2-1.

"We made some mental mistakes, but give EL credit, they are a good team," Daigle said. "They are a tough team."

Jordan Tate scored the final goal for Edward Little. Amanda Williams had five saves for the Red Eddies and Asia Le had 20 for the Rams.

"We have some things to work on between now and Tuesday," said Daigle. "We'll pick up the pieces and come ready to go Tuesday."

The Rams play Eastern A finalist Messalonskee on Tuesday.

Defending Class B state champion Gardiner had its season opener with Erskine postponed because of the heatwave that hit Maine this week. Messalonskee was scheduled to play Lawrence and Nokomis was set to host Winslow, both both of those games were postponed as well.
