WATERVILLE — The Colby College women’s 1,600-meter relay team of Emily Doyle, Frances Onyilagha, Emily Tolman and Britteny Bell won the New England title at the New England Division III Track and Field Championships on Saturday at Colby College’s Harold Alfond Stadium.

A week after finishing third at the New England Small College Athletic Conference championship, the Colby women’s team finished third at the New England Championships in a field of 25 teams. The Mules had 78 points and finished behind champion MIT (126.5) and Tufts University 93.

The Bates men finished with 144 points to beat MIT by one point for the men’s title. Tufts was third with 71 points, followed by Williams (60) and Coast Guard (46).

Colby’s 1,600 relay team finished in 3 minutes, 51.75 seconds, with Tolman coming up big on the third leg. She started behind Rhode Island College’s Natasha Miller on the handoff and was able to pass her on the second turn, giving Bell a sizable lead for the anchor leg.

Colby’s 400 relay team of Bell, Tolman, Doyle and Onyilagha finished second in a time of 48.09, while Bell and Alanna McDonough both broke a 27-year-old Colby record in the 400 hurdles. McDonough, running in an earlier heat, had a time of 1:03.92 to break the record set by Heather Frazier in 1986 to finish fifth overall. Just minutes later, Bell broke McDonough’s record with a time of 1:03.15 to finish fifth.

Doyle broke Bell’s school record in the 400 with a time of 56.45.

The Bates men had a big day Friday to help secure the title, bringing home three individual titles. David Hardison of Bates College won the decathlon, scoring 6,308 points to hold of Coast Guard’s Clay Kosack (6,167) and Worcester State’s Jason Sliwoski (6,068).

Bates teammate David Pless repeated as the New England DIII champ in the hammer throw with a toss of 201-11 on Friday and followed that up with a titles in the shot put (59-9.75) and the discus (180-08) on Saturday. Also for Bates, Tully Hannan won the 10,000 with a time of 31:20.92.

For the Colby men on Friday, Jamaal Grant finished fourth in the long jump and Andrew Herwig was fifth in the decathlon. On Saturday, John Gilboy finished fifth in the shot put with a throw of 48-11.5 and the 1,600 relay team of Luke Doherty Munro, Caleb Harris, Andrew Martinez and Kevin Clarke combined for a time of 3:23.14 to finish eighth.

Women’s lacrosse

Middlebury 11, Colby 10: The seventh-ranked Mules took a big lead, but eventually lost to the third-ranked Panthers in the NESCAC semifinals in Hartford, Conn.

The Mules (12-4) likely will receive an at-large bid to the NCAA Division III tournament when the pairings are announced at 9:30 tonight. Middlebury (15-1) moves on to face Trinity in the title game at noon today.

Colby jumped out to a 6-1 lead in the first half and extended that to 8-5 at halftime. The Mules pushed the lead to 10-6 with 22:43 to play but the Panthers did not allow a goal the rest of the way.

Lindsey McKenna scored three goals for Colby while Katharine Eddy added two. Tess Petesch, Kate Pistel, Alex Mintz, Hilary Barr and Abby Hooper each scored once. Michelle Burt made 9 saves while Claire Dickson made one for the Mules.

Margaret Souther led Middlebury with five goals. Alyssa Palomba stopped 10 shots.

Baseball

Maine 8-3, Albany 6-4: Tommy Lawrence pitched a complete game to improve to 9-2, winning Game 1 of the Black Bears’ America East doubleheader split.

Lawrence allowed six runs, five earned, on six hits while striking out seven. Colin Gay had a two-run triple in the game.

In Game 2, Alex Calbrick had an RBI double for Maine (28-18, 15-7). A.J. Bazdanes took the loss, allowing four runs on 12 hits. Albany is now 21-18-1 and 14-9 in conference play.

The two teams finish their three-game America East series at noon today.

Amherst 5-8, Colby 1-2: Bob Cook pitched a complete game in the opener and Dylan Driscoll earned the victory in the nightcap as the Lord Jeffs swept a doubleheader against the Mules in Waterville.

Cook struck out five and didn’t walk a batter to earn the win for Amherst (22-11). He allowed just one earned run.

Driscoll pitched five innings and struck out three.

Colby ends the season 11-23.

Softball

Hartford 4-0, Maine 0-4: Hannah Hill pitched a one-hit shutout in the second game as the Black Bears earned an America East split in Orono.

EmJ Fogel went 3 for 4 with one run scored and an RBI in Game 2. Stephanie Wood and Nikki Byron also had RBIs in the game.

Hartford (20-32, 10-8) scored three runs in the fourth inning. Sawyer Fried had the big hit with a two-run double.

Maine (8-39, 4-13) closes out its season at 11 a.m. today with a game against Hartford.
