RUMFORD — Sarah Wade is off to a fast start at the Class A skiing championships.

The Mt. Blue junior followed up her second-place finish in the Classical race Monday by winning the women’s freestyle at Black Mountain on Tuesday afternoon.

Wade finished in 14 minutes, 56.6 seconds. She was about 10 seconds ahead of Abby Popenoe of Portland. Wade’s teammate Leah Hardy was 21st in 17:48.3.

Silas Eastman of Fryeburg Academy won the boys freestyle race in 11:45.6. He also won the Classical race Monday.

Mt. Blue’s Zach Veayo and Isaac Doiron finished seventh and eighth, respectively. Veayo finished in 13:10.4 while Doiron checked in at 13:22.1

Teammate Silas Rogers was 15th.

The Mt. Blue boys finished second in the Nordic competition with 112 points. Falmouth won the Nordic title with 84 points, followed by Leavitt with 121 and Fryeburg with 189.

Falmouth also won the Nordic girls competition with 61 points. Portland is second with 79, followed by Leavitt (93), Oxford Hills (140) and Mt. Blue (144).

Mt. Abram hosted the Class A Giant Slalom races.

Allarie Lever of Edward Little won the girls race with a two-run total of 1:46.88. Sam Perlmutter of Greely took the boys title in 1:50.54.

Mt. Blue sophomore Max Kay finished 12th with a two-run time of 2 minutes. Kyle Farrington (2:00.75) was 13th. On the girls side, Katerina Bessey (2:01.34) and Hannah Gibson (2:02.31) finished 21st and 22nd, respectively.

“Today was not a good day for Mt. Blue Alpine,” Mt. Blue coach Mark Cyr said. “It was a combination of nerves and we tried to over-ski the course.”

In Class C, Freeport took the top two spots in the boys Giant Slalom races.

Ryder Bennell finished first with a two-race total of 1:27.75. Blake Enrico followed right behind in 1:29.18. Freeport’s Caleb Abbott finished in sixth.

Freeport won the boys Giant Slalom title with 19 points, followed by Fort Kent with 24 and Mountain Valley with 58. The Fort Kent girls won the GS title with 43 points, followed by Mountain Valley (48), Freeport (66) and Central Aroostook (98).

Daniel Streinz of Katahdin won the Class C 5-kilometer Nordic freestyle in 13:07.9.

Dylan Thombs of Monmouth finished eighth in 14:48.3. Winthrop’s Aaron St. Pierre was 10th in 15:09.0.

Monmouth’s Becca Bryant and Winthrop’s Jada Choate finished tied at 18th in a time of 19:22.2. Also for Winthrop, Rachel Ingram was 24th and Mary Blanchard 27. Jordyn Mann finished 26th for Monmouth.

Merriconeag won both the boys and the girls Nordic titles. The boys finished with 63 points, ahead of Freeport (96) and Fort Kent (109). The Winthrop boys were fifth with 254 points and Monmouth was 10th (364).

The Merriconeag girls finished with 46 points, ahead of Freeport (66) and Fort Kent (195).

Winthrop was sixth with 241 points, while Monmouth was eighth with 249.
