TRACK AND FIELD: McClintock wins gold

Madison Area Memorial High School graduate Matt McClintock won the 10,000-meter run at the Pan-American Junior Championships on Saturday in Medellin, Columbia.

McClintock, of Athens, pulled away from the field late to win the race with a time of 31 minutes, 12.39 seconds. Jupiter Carera Casas of Mexico was second, 8.38 seconds behind McClintock.

McClintock, a sophomore at Purdue University, earned his spot in the Pan-Am Junior Championships by winning the U.S. Junior National Championships in June with a time of 31:14.31.

Purdue University sent four athletes to the Pan-Am games, three of whom won medals. Cody Blair won silver for Team USA in the shot put, while Vanessa McLeod won bronze in the women's 800 for Canada.

McClintock is back at Purdue, preparing for the upcoming cross country season. Last fall, McClintock finished eighth at the Big Ten Cross Country Championships with a time of 24:04 over the 8K race. He was named the Big Ten Cross Country Freshman of the Year. He went on to finish 103rd at the NCAA championships.

He also qualified to run in the World Junior Cross Country Championships and finished 20th at the meet, held in Bydgoczck, Poland. McClintock was the top American finisher at the world championships, leading Team USA to a fourth-place finish.

McClintock qualified for the world cross country championships by finishing third at the USA Cross Country Junior Championships in February in St. Louis with a time of 24:51.9.
