RALEIGH, N.C. — The University of Maine women’s basketball team dropped its regular-season opener 71-41 to Auburn in the opening round of the Sheraton Raleigh Wolfpack Invitational on Friday.

Anna Heise led the Maine (0-1) offense with 12 points and four rebounds. Fellow freshman Liz Wood added eight points, four rebounds and two assists.

Hasina Muhammad led Auburn (1-0) with a career-high 20 points.

New Hampshire Technical Institute 63, UMaine-Augusta 56: Sara Romano scored 16 points to lead NHTI (2-0) to the win in Concord, N.H. Allura Leblanc chipped in with 13 points.

UMA (1-1) was led by Arreonte Lee with a game-high 22 points. She also had 14 rebounds and four steals. Alyssa Marson added 15 points for the Moose while Corinne Dingley had seven points and nine rebounds and Haley Madore added six points and nine rebounds.

College men’s hockey

UMass-Lowell 2, Maine 1: Ben Hutton scored to give the Black Bears a 1-0 lead, but the River Hawks rallied back to two second period goals in Orono.

Ben Hutton scored his first collegiate goal of Maine (1-9-0, 0-5-0 in Hockey East play) with five seconds left in the first period.

UMass-Lowell (2-3-1 overall, 1-2-1 in the conference) tied it on a goal by Riley Wetmore early in the second period and took the lead when Josh Holmstrom scored.

Martin Ouellette had 23 saves for Maine. Doug Carr made 24 saves for the River Hawks.
