ORONO -- As openers go, it was a forgettable night Thursday for the University of Maine football team.
Herb Glass kicked a 21-yard field goal early in the first quarter to give Albany all the points it would need in a 3-0 victory over the Black Bears in the regular season opener for both teams.
Former Lewiston standout Jared Turcotte rushed for a team-high 90 yards on 18 carries to pace Maine (0-1). Turcotte also caught two passes for 17 yards.
Black Bear quarterbacks Chris Treister and Warren Smith combined to complete just 12 of their 30 passing attempts for 112 yards.
Smith was picked off once.
Maine was held to just 11 first downs, compared to 17 from Albany.
Albany racked up 162 yards of total offense compared to just 135 for Maine.
Andrew Smith rushed for a game-high 129 yards on 17 carries to lead Albany while Ryan Kirchner caught seven passes for 61 yards.
Defensively, Jerry McMillian had a big night for Maine, recording 13 tackles.
Maine returns to action Saturday at Monmouth.
