LOCAL ROUNDUP: Kemp sparks Mustangs

MONMOUTH -- Kylie Kemp had 14 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Monmouth girls basketball team past Mountain Valley 49-30 in Mountain Valley Conference action Saturday.

Melissa Brassard added 11 points for the Mustangs (5-0) while Sierra Spencer chipped in with six points and seven rebounds.

The Falcons (1-3) were led by Brooke Dolloff with nine points.

College men's basketball

Maine 84, Florida Gulf Coast 78: Justin Edwards scored 27 points, grabbed 11 rebounds to lead the Black Bears to the win.

Maine is now 4-8 while FGCU falls to 8-5. With the Black Bears clinging to a 71-69 lead with 2:44 left, Edwards converted a layup and stole the ball on the ensuing FGCU possession. Xavier Pollard then connected on a three-pointer to give Maine a seven point lead.

The Eagles got within 76-72 with 48 seconds left and 78-74 with 40 seconds left, but Edwards' dunk with 30 seconds remaining sealed the win for Maine.

Brett Comer led Florida Gulf Coast with 14 points and eight assists.
