NAPERVILLE, Ill. -- Monmouth Academy graduate and University of Southern Maine sophomore Kevin Desmond qualified for the finals in the 800-meter run, while Colby College senior Dom Kone failed to qualified in the 60 at the NCAA Division III Track and Field Championships on Friday night.
Desmond, who set the USM record in the 800 earlier this season, finished seventh in the prelims with a time of 1 minute, 53.4 seconds.
Kone, meanwhile, finished 12th out of 13 runners in the 60 with time of 7.05. Kone suffered a hamstring injury last weekend at the ECAC championships. He is the defending national champ in the 60.
Iowa 9, Maine 2: Sasha Kuebel allowed two runs in seven innings and the Hawkeyes scored six times in the sixth inning on their way to a win over the Black Bears in Port Charlotte, Fla.
Kuebel allowed eight hits, struck out four and walked two to earn the win for Iowa (5-6). Josh Martsching pitched two scoreless innings of relief, allowing one hit, striking out one and walking none.
Blake Hickman had two hits and scored twice, while Jake Yacinich drove in a pair of runs for Iowa.
Brian Doran had two hits for Maine (6-10).
Tennessee Tech 4, Maine 1: Stephanie Wood doubled and Kylie Sparks pitched six effective innings, but it wasn't enough for Maine in a non-league game in Tampa, Fla. Tennessee Tech scored a pair of unearned runs.
Youngstown State 13, Maine 9: Kelly Stowe homered and Jordan Ingalls had three RBIs to lead the Penguins (1-3) in Tampa, Fla.
Hilary Kane had an RBI single for Maine (1-15). EmJ Fogel went 4-for-8 with an RBI in the two games combined for Maine.
NCAA championships: Colby College senior Marc Massie finished 14th in the men's slalom and senior Cassady Roberts used a strong second run to finish 14th in the women's race, in Middlebury, Vt.
Craig Marshall had a solid second run as well and finished 20th for the Colby men, while Jim Ryan finished 22nd.
Colby earned 89 points Friday and finished the NCAA meet with 132 points. The Mules, who have no Nordic skiers competing today, are 11th in the total team results.
