BOSTON — Ryan O’Reilly scored a power-play goal in the first period and the Colorado Avalanche shut out the Boston Bruins 2-0 Thursday at the TD Garden.

O’Reilly scored with 40 seconds left in the first period to give Colorado a 1-0 lead. Andre Benoit and Matt Duchene each had an assist.

Duchene added an empty-netter in the third period to make it 2-0.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere had 39 saves to earn the shut out for Colorado (4-0-0). Tuukka Rask stopped 28 shots for the Bruins (2-1-0).

Hurricanes 3, Capitals 2: Nathan Gerbe scored the tiebreaking goal at 6:59 of the third period, Anton Khudobin stopped 30 shots and the Carolina Hurricanes beat the Washington Capitals.

Elias Lindholm and former Capital Alexander Semin also scored for the Hurricanes, now 25-2-4 over the past nine seasons against Washington when scoring at least three goals.

Jason Chimera and Alex Ovechkin had goals for the Capitals, who took four of five from Carolina last season. Ovechkin has seven points (five goals, two assists), the most he’s had after four games since 2010.
