MIDDLEBURY, Vt. — Middlebury broke open a tie game with two fourth quarter touchdowns to beat Colby College 27-10 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference football game Saturday.

The game was tied at 10 when Matthew Crimmons intercepted at pass and ran it back 15 yards for a touchdown to give the Panthers (2-0) the lead with 14 minutes, 46 seconds left. The Mules missed a field goal on their next possession and Middlebury capitalized, scoring on a 77-yard touchdown pass from McCallum Foote to Matthew Mino. Michael Dola tacked on a 27-yard field goal with 3:37 left in the game.

Middlebury took a 3-0 lead on its first drive of the game when Dola kicked a 33-yard field goal. The Panthers went up 10-0 when Foote capped a 10-play, 73-yard drive with a 21-yard TD pass to tight end William Sadik-Kahn.

Colby (1-1) got back in the game with a 14-play, 90-yard drive that ended with a 7-yard TD pass from Justin Ciero to Cony High School graduate Luke Duncklee with 11:31 left in the second quarter. The Mules tied it on a 27-yard field goal by Louw Scheepers in the third quarter.

Middlebury drove to the Colby-1 on its ensuing possession, but turned the ball over on downs.

Ciero finished 28 for 38 passes for 203 yards and a touchdown. He also led the Mules in rushing with 50 yards on 14 carries. Duncklee caught 5 passes for 24 yards.

Foote completed 30 for 46 passes for 349 yards for Middlebury.

Bates 20, Tufts 16: Ivan Reese scored on a 1-yard TD run in the fourth quarter as the Bobcats won in Lewiston.

Reese’s TD run capped a 17-play, 96-yard drive that lifted Bates (1-1) to the win. Tufts (0-2) had taken a 16-14 lead on a 27-yard field goal by James Bockhorst.

Shawn Doherty scored on a 48-yard run and a 7-yard run in the first quarter to give Bates a 14-0 lead. Bockhorst hit a 32-yard field goal in the first, then Jack Doll scored on a 1-yard run in the third quarter, followed by a 26-yard field goal by Bockhorst to bring Tufts within 1, 14-13.

Doherty rushed 24 times for 182 yards for Bates and Ryan Curit added 82 yards on 21 carries. Jack Doll was 46 for 67 for 397 yards passing for Tufts.

Amherst 21, Bowdoin 11: The Jeffs held the Polar Bears to just 16 yards rushing and pulled away with a pair of fourth-quarter touchdowns to win in Amherst, Mass.

Amherst took a 7-0 lead when Jake O’Malley caught a 13-yard TD pass from Max Lippe in the first quarter and tacked on a pair of field goals by Phillip Nwosuo to take a 13-3 lead in the third quarter. Bowdoin scored on a 22-yard field goal by Andrew Murowchick in the second quarter.

The Jeffs stretched the lead to 27-3 on a 30-yard TD pass from Lippe to Gene Garay and a 1-yard run by Nick Kelley in the fourth quarter. Bowdoin scored on a 2-yard run by Trey Brown.

Western New England 59, Maine Maritime Academy 0: Kevin Cook scored three touchdowns and rushed for 122 yards, while Terrence N’Dabian rushed for 152 yards and two scores in a win over the Mariners in Springfield, Mass.

Michael Ozzella and Tucker Schumitz also scored rushing touchdowns for Western New England, which rushed for a total of 580 yards.

Billy Wetherbee rushed for 68 yards and Ryan O’Neal 61 for MMA (1-2).
