The Milwaukee Brewers pulled pitcher Mark Rogers from his rehab assignment with the Huntsville Stars on Thursday and sent him back to Arizona for medical evaluation.

The move came after Rogers, a hard-throwing righthander from Orrs Island, experienced a tingling sensation in his arm after throwing nine pitches Tuesday night while making his fifth relief appearance for the Class AA Stars since Apr. 23.

“The Brewers sent Mark to Phoenix to see a doctor,” said Ivan Hand, Rogers’ agent. “They don’t think it’s anything serious, but they want to be cautious.”

According to Hand, Rogers had been making progress during his rehab assignment while being used strictly as a reliever.

“His velocity had been steadily improving,” Hand said. “I had reports his fastball had topped out at 95 miles per hour.”

In March, the Brewers placed Rogers, 27, on the disabled list because of “right shoulder instability” after he experienced a loss in velocity at the start of spring training. He was assigned to extended spring training at Milwaukee’s facility in Marysville, Ariz.

It was the latest medical setback for Rogers, a first-round draft pick for the Brewers out of Mt. Ararat High School in Topsham in 2004. He already has had two shoulder surgeries and surgery on both wrists because of carpal tunnel syndrome.

While spending a month in Milwaukee’s starting rotation last season, Rogers went 3-1 with a 3.92 earned run average and 41 strikeouts in 39 innings. In all, he pitched 134 1/3 innings over 18 starts with Triple-A Nashville and seven starts with the Brewers.
