COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Bird's 35 points spark Terriers

POULTNEY, Vt. -- Karin Bird scored 35 points to lead the Thomas College women's basketball team to a 91-70 win over Green Mountain College in North Atlantic Conference action Saturday.

Ashley Matchett of Skowhegan added 18 points for Thomas (3-15, 3-9). Millicent Hopper led Green Mountain (2-15, 0-12).

Castleton 73, UMF 48: Stephanie Bull scored 18 points off the bench to lead the host Spartans to the NAC win.

Mt. Abram graduate Kenni Norton led the Beavers with 13 points whle Paige Saunders added eight points, six rebounds and four blocks. Castleton State is 14-4 overall and 11-1 in conference play while the University of Maine at Farmington falls to 6-11, 5-6.

Maine 48, Binghamton 47: Samantha Baranowski scored a career-high 20 points as the Black Bears won an America East game in Orono.

Rebecca Knight added six points, five rebounds and three assists for Maine (6-16, 3-6). Brittany Williams chipped in nine points.

Andrea Holmes had 14 points for Binghamton (10-12, 4-5).

Men's basketball

Maine 67, Binghamton 59: Mike Allison notched a double-double with 10 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Black Bears to the America East victory. Maine is now 10-10 overall and 4-5 in league play while Binghamton falls to 0-21 and 0-9.

Justin Edwards led Maine with 18 points while Gerald McLemore scored 15. Binghamton's Jimmy Gray led all scorers with 24 points.

Bowdoin 67, Colby 40: Andrew Madlinger scored a game-high 18 points to lead the Polar Bears to the New England Small College Athletic Conference win in Brunswick.

Maximilian Staiger and John Swords both had 10 points for Bowdoin (13-5, 3-3).

Eric Beaulieu had eight points and six rebounds to lead the Mules (6-12, 1-5).

Thomas 97, Green Mountain 56: Jarrad DeVaughn scored 21 points and had eight assists as the Terriers won a NAC game in Poultney, Vt.

Franklin Salvador and Martin Cleveland each added 18 points for Thomas (10-7, 7-5).

Jeremiah Aponte had 11 points and 11 rebounds, while Carnelius Green had 10 points and eight rebounds for Green Mountain (3-13, 2-10).

Castleton State 92, UMF 72: The Spartans outscored the Beavers 51-36 in the second half to earn the NAC win. Mark Comstock scored 24 points to lead Castleton (12-7).

Pet Sumner led the Beavers (10-8) with 18 points while Andrew Dickey and Yusuf Iman each scored 12.

Women's hockey

Trinity 2, Colby 0: Lindsey Weiner and Abby Ostrom each scored a goal to lead the Bantams (10-7-0) to the NESCAC win in Hartford, Conn. Alex Pujol made 28 saves for her third straight shutout.

Brianne Wheeler stopped 32 shots for the Mules (4-12-2).

Skiing

Alpine: Craig Marshall had a two-run time of 1:38.33 to take 15th place for the Colby men. Marc Massie finished 18th in 1:38.64. For the Colby women, Natalie Biedermann was 11th in 1:45.27 while Cassady Roberts was 19th (1:46.96) and Brittney Ziebell was 24th (1:48.45).

Nordic: Jake Barton came in seventh place in the 20-kilometer freestyle mass start in a time of 50:00.9. John Dixon finished 20th in 50:43.2 and Levin Zars was 26th in 51:29.2. For the Colby women, Olga Golovkina was 24th (45:08) in the 15K freestyle mass start while Lizzie Anderson was 29th (45:40.3).

Also Saturday: Richmond High School graduate Marc Zaharchuk scored eight points in the Husson men's basketball team's 73-50 win over Maine Maritime Academy in Castine. ... Winthrop High School graduate Sam Leclerc scored a career-high 30 points as the Bentley men's basketball team beat Southern Connecticut State 80-75 in Waltham, Mass.
