COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Balanced attack lifts UMF

FARMINGTON -- Four different players scored as the University of Maine at Farmington defeated Husson University 4-1 in North Atlantic Conference field hockey action Saturday.

Annie Agnew, Lily Berry, Mt. Blue graduate Kaitlyn Bullen and Gardiner grad Kashley Weymouth each scored for the Beavers (4-5-0, 4-1-0). Weymouth and Bullen also had an assist apiece. Felisha Taylor, a Cony graduate, made three saves.

Nokomis graduate Sabrina Vaillancourt scored for Husson (7-7-0, 5-1-0). Maicee Gustin made six saves.

Bowdoin 3, Colby 0: Cathleen Smith had a hand in every goal as the sixth-ranked Polar Bears won the New England Small College Athletic Conference game in Waterville.

Smith had two goals and an assist for Bowdoin, which improves to 8-1-0 overall, 4-1-0 in the conference. Katie Riley also scored and had an assist for the Polar Bears.

Michelle Burt had 10 saves for Colby (4-5-0, 0-5-0).

St. Joseph's 2, Thomas 0: Amanda Celeta scored twice as the Monks won a NAC game in Waterville.

Sofia Sourgiadakis had four saves for Thomas (4-8-0, 2-4-0).

Maine 2, Fairfield 1 OT: Zoe Adkins scored 3:32 into overtime to lift the Black Bears to the America East win in Orono.

Hannah Keating scored the other goal for Maine (8-5-0, 2-0-0). Alicia Frisch stopped five shots.

Kaitlyn Taddeo scored for Fairfield (7-7-0, 0-2-0). Maddy Sposito made seven saves.

Women's soccer

Thomas 2, Green Mountain College 0: Gardiner graduate Jenn Day scored both goals off direct kicks to help the Terriers earn the NAC win in Poultney, Vt.

Kate Thibodeau made four saves for Thomas (3-8-0, 1-4-0). Emma Lord stopped eight shots for the Eagles (0-10-0, 0-4-0).

Bowdoin 2, Colby 0: Morgan Woodhouse and Alexa Yurick each scored a goal to lead the Polar Bears to the NESCAC win in Waterville. Bridget McCarthy made five saves for Bowdoin (8-1-0, 4-1-0).

Emily Brook stopped six shots for the Mules (5-3-0, 2-3-0).

Castleton 3, UMF 0: Mallory Costello scored two goals and Ericka Davis added another to lead host Castleton to the NAC victory. Sarah Ethier and Emily Osmer had assists for Castleton (8-3-1). Beth Lebel had five saves to pace UMF (6-5-1).

Men's soccer

Thomas 2, Green Mountain College 0: Josh Phelps scored two second-half goals to lift the Terriers to the NAC victory in Poultney, Vt.

Phelps scored the eventual game-winner in the 51st minute when he converted a pass from Maranacook graduate Dakota Duplisse. Mikkail Crockwell earned the shutout by making three saves for Thomas (7-2-2).

Green Mountain dropped to 2-7-0.

Bowdoin 2, Colby 0: Eddie Jones and Eric Goitia each scored a goal to lead the Polar Bears to the NESCAC win in Waterville. Andrew Jones added an assist while Will Wise made two saves for Bowdoin (7-1-1, 3-1-1).

Cody Funkhouser stopped two shots for Colby (3-4-2, 0-3-2).

Castleton 3, UMF 0: Castleton (9-3-0) scored three first-half goals and Emmitt Ackerman had four saves to earn the shutout. Nick Johnas, Bryce Kaler and Spencer Dandurand all scored for Castleton. Paul Dupre had 12 saves for UMF (1-10-0).

Cross country

The University of Maine at Farmington finished second to St. Joseph's in the Runnin' Monks Invitational in Standish. Salena Sykes led the Beavers with a seventh place finish while teammate Farren Welzel finished eighth.

Emerson won the men's title while UMF finished fifth. Erskine graduate Jackson Fortin fiished third overall for the Beavers while teammate Josh Wynne was seventh. Will Janakis finished 11th for Thomas.

Eva Lauer finished 11th and Kate Connolly checked in at 18th to lead Colby at the James Earley Women's Cross Country Invitational at Westfield State.

Lauer finished in 22 minutes, 52.33 seconds over the 6-kilometer course. Connolly finished in 23:16.65 for the Mules, who finished in fourth out of 43 scoring teams with a 177. Middlebury College won with 28 points.
