There are some familiar local names on the University of Maine at Augusta women’s basketball roster this season and they belong to good players.

Former Richmond star Jamie Plummer landed in coach Jenn Laney’s lap after transferring from Bates College early in the school year.

“I think sometimes things don’t necessarily work out,” Plummer said of her transfer. “It wasn’t the right time. I’m happy where I am now.”

The 6-foot-1 Plummer averaged 23 points a game last season in leading the Bobcats to their third straight Western Maine Class D championship. In UMA’s season-opening win against Eastern Maine Community College she scored 31 points.

“(She’s) going to be a big help, not only skill-wise but with her positive attitude and leadership,” Laney said. “

Another welcome addition is 5-11 senior Kristi Violette, who helped Cony High to a Class A state title in 2007. She went on the University of Southern Maine where she led the Little East Conference in rebounding as a sophomore before a stress fracture curtailed her career at the school.

Unfortunately for Violette and UMA, she broke her wrist in the team’s first practice and isn’t expected back until January.

“It was a very tough loss right off the get-go,” Laney said.

Former Monmouth standout Jen Lola has returned after a two-year absence and picked up where she left off in the opener by scoring 16 points. She is one of the team’s captains.

“She’s just very strong,” Laney said. “She can play any position on the court.”

Sophomore guard Arreonte Lee of San Antonio, Texas, returns after a banner first season when she averaged 20 points a game and was named a United States Collegiate Athletic Association All-American. She scored 23 points in the season opener.

Courtney Jicks of Lake Charles, La. is the team’s point guard while Erskine graduate Chrissy Peaslee returns to the team after a year off and is another starter. Jasmine Brown, 6-4, who didn’t play ball while attending Skowhegan, is another intriguing player on UMA’s roster .

“She’s a very strong rebounder,” Laney said. “And I think she’s going to be great for us under the basket,”

Lisbon grad Angie Bulgin returns to the team while newcomers include Tessa Crocker and Rachel Small of Augusta and Leavitt graduate Erika St. Pierre. The Moose went 11-12 in Yankee Small College Conference play last season and although the schedule looks tougher this season, Laney believes her team can make a run at the title, especially after Violette returns.

“We’re really got a solid group,” she said. “We’re very quick in transition. I think you’ll see us getting out and running quite a bit. We’re got a little bit of everything.”
