NEWPORT — Gardiner’s Peter Del Gallo and Skowhegan’s Tyler Craig are among high school wrestlers returning to the New England high school meet March 8-9 in Providence, R.I., following a qualifying tournament Thursday at Nokomis High School. Del Gallo, a two-time state champ and undefeated in Maine competition, defeated Marshwood’s Bradley Beaulieu 3-1 in the 113-pound division finals. Last year, Del Gallo went on to win the New England title in the 106-pound division.

Craig, who finished fifth at the New Englands last year, pinned Marshwood’s Josh Marks in the 120 finals. Craig’s younger brother Cody won the 106 title while Skowhegan teammate Kaleb Brown beat Monmouth’s Stewart Buzzell 7-2 in the 145-pound division.

The top three finishers in each weight class qualify for the New England meet while fourth-place finishers are alternates, Also qualifying were three-time Class B state champ Aaron Lint of Winslow in the heavyweight division where he pinned Mt. Blue’s Wil Gunter in the finals and Skowhegan’s Kameron Doucette, who lost to Class A state champ Dominick Day of Biddeford, 10-5 in overtime at 138 pounds.

Skowhegan’s Mikal Federici qualified with a second-place finish at 182 as did Christopher Wilson of Nokomis, who finished second at 195. Third-place finishers included Maine Central Institute’s Dylan Dalhberg (125), Skowhegan’s Julian Sirois (132), Rusty Wilson of Nokomis (182), Cony’s Nic Benner (220) and Mt. View’s Chris Cole (285). Placing fourth were Oak Hill’s Danny Buteau (106), Mt. View’s Jarryd Fonger (132) and Job Mesaric (220) and Skowhegan’s Logan Stevens (160).

SLALOM

WOMEN: Colby’s Mardi Haskell finished second overall to help the Mules to a second-place team finish at the Eastern Championships at the Middlebury Snow Bowl in Middlebury, Vt.

The women were unable to finish their second run due to weather issues so the first run ended up counting as the final times. Haskell had her best finish in an Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association carnival with a time of 49.23 seconds. Paige Whistler took sixth place (50.0) followed by Sierra Leavitt (9th, 51.05), Brittney Ziebell (22nd, 52.78) and Jeanne Barthold (24th, 53.24) for the Mules.

Dartmouth won the event with 129 points, but the Mules (117) did beat powerhouse Vermont (3rd, 111) while Middlebury was a distant fourth with 117 points.

MEN: The men were able to get both runs in and Colby’s Craig Marshall finished in 17th place in 1:38.70. Michael Boardman was the second Colby skier to finish (18th, 1:38.75) while Jim Ryan was 29th in 1:40.94.

The Mules placed sixth out of 13 teams with a score of 63.

NORDIC

WOMEN: Colby’s Amy Bianco had her best collegiate finish by taking fifth place in the 5-kilometer classic at the Eastern Championships at Rikert Nordic Center in Middlebury, Vt.

Bianco had a time of 17:46.8 to help the Mules finish fifth in the team standings. Lizzie Anderson took 19th in 18:17.2 and Olivia Amber was 31st in 18:50.5.

MEN: The Men placed sixth overall behind an 18th-place finish from Silas Eastman (29:38). Jefferson Tucker took 20th in 29:46 and John Dixon was 34th.
