FARMINGTON — Richmond High School graduate Marc Zaharchuk surpassed the 1,000 point mark for his career as the Husson University men’s basketball team beat Castleton 74-68 in the North Atlantic Conference championship game Saturday at Dearborn Gymnasium at the University of Maine at Farmington.

Zaharchuk finished with eight points and now has 1,005 points for her career. He was named the tournament MVP after scoring 22 points in the semifinals and 20 points and eight rebounds in the quarterfinals.

No. 2 Husson wins the NAC title for the third time in five season. The Eagles improve to 20-8 overall 17-4 in the conference. The Eagles receive an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III tournament with the tournament title.

Lawrence High School graduate Brooks Spaulding added 12 points and seven rebounds for the Eagles. 

Aaron Willis also had 16 points, while Phil Leighton and Corey Wood each had 10 for Husson.

Mark Comstock scored  game-high 25 points for Castleton. Logan White added 12.

Men’s hockey

No. 2 Williams 2, No. 7 Colby 1: Craig Kitto scored the eventual game-winning goal with late in the second period as the Ephs beat the Mules in a New England Small College Athletic Conference quarterfinal game in Williamstown, Mass.

Colby ends the season 7-15-3 overall, while Williams improves to 16-6-3 and advances to the NESCAC semifinals.

UMass 5, Maine 2: Jake Rutt and Bill Norman each scored goals for the Black Bears, but it wasn’t enough to beat the Minutemen in Amherst, Mass.

Martin Ouellette made 22 saves for Maine (9-17-6, 5-12-6 Hockey East).

Steve Mastalerz made 23 saves for UMass (11-17-2, 8-14-1 Hockey East).

Women’s basketball

Stony Brook 56, Maine 53: Sabre Proctor scored 19 points and Dani Klupenger scored 18 to lead  the Seawolves to the America East win in Stony Brook, N.Y. Lauren Bodine led UMaine with 16 points while Liz Wood added 13 points and eight rebounds. Maine is 4-23, 3-11 in America East while Stony Brook is 14-14, 6-9 in the conference.

Women’s hockey

Middlebury 6, Colby 0: The Mules finished their season  with a loss to the Panthers in a NESCAC quarterfinal game. Brianne Wheeler stopped 33 shotsi n goal for colby which finishes at 10-15. Middlebury is 17-6-2.

Women’s track

Open New England Championships: The Colby College women’s indoor track and field team set three school records in the relay races at the Open New England Championships at Boston University.

The 3,200 relay team of Laura Duff, Ginny Keesler, Alanna McDonough, and Morgan Lingar finished in seventh place with a time of 9 minutes, 20.50 seconds. The team was second among Division III teams in the meet that includes squads and athletes of all three NCAA divisions.

Men’s squash

CSA National Team Championship: CJ Smith and Roy Simpson III won at the top two spots for the Colby College men’s squash team in a semifinal win over Georgetown University in the Conroy Division  at the College Squash Association National Team Championships in New Haven, Conn.

The Mules will play in the final of the (D) Division against Stanford University today at 9 a.m. Stanford posted a 9-0 win against Bucknell in the other Conroy Division semifinal.

Smith won his match in four games, while Simpson won his match in five games.

College Alpine

USCSA Eastern Region Championships: University of Maine at Farmington sophomore Alex Rose placed fifth overall to lead the Beavers to a seventh place team finish the USCSA Eastern Region giant slalom championships, held Saturday at the Mt. Abram ski area in Greenwood.

In the women’s giant slalom race, Meghan Donovan was UMaine-Farmington’s top finisher in 36th place with a time of 2:09.26. Skowhegan native Natalie Dumont was 43rd with a time of 2:19.17.

EISA Championships: Cassady Roberts finished in 11th place in the slalom for the Colby College women’s Alpine team at the  Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships at Sunday River in Bethel. Roberts had runs of 58.97 and 1:05.14 for a two-run total time of 2:04.11.

Matt McKenna placed 11th for the men in the slalom with a two-run time of 2:01.50.

College Nordic

EISA Championships: Molly Susla was 23rd in the women’s 10-kilometer mass start and Calvin Wight took 26th for the Colby College men’s Nordic team at the Eastern Intercollegiate Ski Association Championships at Black Mountain in Rumford.

Susla finished in a time of 30 minutes, 14.8 seconds to help the women place 10th.
Wight went 15 kilometers in 39:50.4 and teammate John Dixon was right behind him in 27th at 39:52.8. The pair helped the Mules take ninth.

Also Saturday: Maranacook graduate Ryan Martin scored 17 points for Keene State as his team was beaten 60-53 by Rhode Island College in the Little East Conference championship game. Martin scored 23 points Friday night as the Owls beat Eastern Connecticut 60-53….University of Southern Maine runner and Monmouth Academy graduate Kevin Desmond finished in eighth place in the 800-meter final of the NEIcAAA Indoor Track and Field Championships with a time of 1:59.09….Belgrade native Teraysa White made 32 saves in net for the St. Scholastica (Minn.) women’s hockey team in its 2-1 win over Forest College in the NCHA O’Brien quarterfinals.
