LOCAL COLLEGE ROUNDUP: Slotnick helps Colby women's hockey to win

NEW LONDON, Conn. — Samantha Slotnik scored goals in each of the first two periods and also had an assist as the Colby women’s hockey team beat Connecticut College 3-2 in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game Saturday.

Annie Papadellis added two assists for Colby (5-8-0, 1-7-0 in the conference). Megan Fortier chipped with a goal and goalie Brianne Wheeler had 39 saves.

Amelia Dineen and Shelley Moore each scored for Connecticut College.

Boston University 5, Maine 2: The Terriers scored four straight goals, two in first period and two in the second, on their way to a Hockey East win over the Black Bears in Orono.

Jennelle Kohanchuk and Louise Warren scored in the first period, while Isabel Menard and Marie-Philip Poulin scored in the second for BU (13-3-3, 8-2-1 in Hockey East). Kohanchuk also scored in the third. Brittany Dougherty scored a short-handed goal in the second period for Maine (3-16-1, 1-9-0 in Hockey East).

Men’s hockey

Wesleyan 3, Colby 1: Adam Kaiser scored 59 seconds into the third period to tie the game and Nick Craven scored the game-winner with about eight minutes left as the Cardinals rallied to beat the Mules in Waterville.

Colby (3-11-1, 1-8-1 in the New England Small College Athletic Conference) took a 1-0 lead in the first period on a goal by Nick Lanza. Ben Chwick and Cory McGrath each had an assist. Jordan Nathan made 27 saves for the Mules.

Jaren Taenaka added a goal for Wesleyan (7-6-1, 3-4-1 in the conference).

Men’s basketball

Tufts 70, Colby 63: Tom Palleschi scored 13 points and grabbed 14 rebounds to lead the Jumbos in NESCAC game at Wadsworth Gymnasium.

Tufts, which beat Bowdoin on Friday night, improved to 8-7 overall, 2-2 in the NESCAC.

Sam Wilson scored 16 points while Chris Hudnut added 11 to lead the Mules (4-9, 1-2).

Luke Westman added nine points and five rebounds for Colby.

Womens’ basketball

Tufts 51, Colby 37: The Jumbos went on a 14-0 run after falling behind 5-0 and beat the Mules in a NESCAC game in Waterville.

Hannah Foley had 12 points to lead a balanced scoring attack for Tufts, which improves to 15-0 overall and 4-0 in the conference.

Brooke Chandor had 11 points and 10 rebounds for Colby (6-8, 1-2 in the conference).

UMaine-Fort Kent 71, Thomas 67: The Bengals scored 46 points in the second half to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit and defeat the Terriers on the first day of the Star City Classic in Presque Isle.
Sam Carapellucci had 17 points and eight rebounds for UMFK (8-8). Taylor Boucher added 16 points and Jenn Colpitts had 12.

For Thomas, Megan Pelletier and Elizabeth Goodall each scored 17 points, and Emilee Reynolds (13) and Katie McAllister (10) were also in double figures. UMFK had 43 free throw attempts, compared to 20 for Thomas (3-8).

Boucher made the biggest play of the game. With 17 seconds left and the Bengals ahead 68-67, she made the first shot, missed the second, but got her own rebound and drew the foul. Boucher then made two more foul shots to give UMFK a four-point lead.

Albany 71, Maine 39: Julie Forster had 10 points and 12 rebounds as the Great Danes cruised to an America East win over the Black Bears in Albany, N.Y.

Courtney Anderson had 11 points to lead Maine (1-15, 0-3 in the conference). Mikaela Gustaffson added 10 points and five rebounds.

Albany improves to 12-3, 3-0 in the conference.

UM-Fort Kent 71, Thomas 67: Elizabeth Goodall and Megan Pelletier both scored 17 points, but the Terriers lost in Presque Isle.
