ORONO — Martin Ouellette had 33 saves as the University of Maine hockey team earned a 4-4 tie with Northeastern in a Hockey East game Saturday.

Maine (10-17-7, 6-12-7 in Hockey East) led 4-3 in the second period after a goal by Mike Cornell, but Northeastern (9-19-4, 5-16-4 in Hockey East) on a goal by Steve Morra 5:44 into the period.

The Huskies jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first period, but Maine answered with goals by Ryan Lomberg and Adam Shemansky. Colton Sauceman scored before the end of the period to tie it for Northeastern.

Sauceman then gave Northeaster the lead in the second, before Steve Swavely and Cornell scored back-to-back goals to give Maine the lead.


Men’s basketball

Plattsburgh St. 84, Husson 63: Ezra Hodgson had 15 points to lead six players in double figures as the Cardinal beat the Eagles in the first round of the NCAA Division III tournament.

Jordan Moody added 13 points, Shamoy McIntosh and Jordan Moody had 11 each, and Reggie Williams added 10.

Richmond High School graduate Marc Zaharchuk had 12 points for Husson, while Lawrence graduate Brooks Spaulding had six. Eric Modica led Husson with 13 points.

Women’s basketball

New Hampshire 86, Maine 63: Waterville Senior High School graduate Morgan Frame had 10 points and six rebounds as the Wildcats beat the Black Bears in an America East game in Orono.

Cari Reed led UNH (11-17, 6-10 in America East) with 18 points and six rebounds. Kelsey Hogan had a double-double with 15 points and 11 boards, while Ariel Gaston had 10 points.

Lauren Bodine had 18 points for the Black Bears (4-24, 3-12 in America East) who used just six players in the game, their first since they were invovled in a bus accident earlier this week.

Ashleigh Roberts added 14 points, Liz Wood 13 and Courtney Anderson 10 for Maine.

Amherst 71, UNE 34: The Jeffs held the Nor’easters to 19.6 percent shooting and advanced to the sectionals of the NCAA Division III women’s basketball tournament, in Amherst, Mass.

Bridget Crowley and Megan Robertson combined for 29 points, 22 rebounds and eight blocked shots for Amherst. Crowley had 17 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks, while Robertson had 12 points, 11 boards and five blocks.

Beth Suggs scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds for UNE, which ends the season 25-5. Kelly Chipman added nine points and eight rebounds.

Baseball

Western Michigan 1, Maine 0: Brandon Cable hit an RBI single in the second inning as Broncos beat the Black Bears in Port Charlotte, Fla.

Tommy Lawrence took the loss for Maine (4-6), allowing one run on eight hits in six innings of work. He walked one and struck out five.

Mike Moyer pitched 7 1/3 innings for Western Michigan (2-9) and allowed three hits to earn the win.

Softball

Illinois 7, Maine 1: Shelese Arnold struck out seven and allowed just one earned run as the Illni beat the Black Bears in Clearwater, Fla.

Alex Booker had two hits and two RBIs for Illinois (5-11).

Kristen Koslosky had two hits for the Black Bears (1-6).

Track and field

Brittany Reardon broke her own school record in the 60-meter hurdles, in New York.
Reardon finished second in the finals with a time of 8.98 to break the record of 8.99 she set last year. She also finished ninth in the pole vault on Friday with a leap of 11-0.25.

For Colby at the Tufts Last Chance Meet, the 1,600-meter relay team of Emily Doyle, Frances Onyilagha, Emily Tolman and Brittney Bell broke their own school record with a time of 3:51.86.

For the Colby men at the ECAC championships, Dom Kone did not compete in the 60-meter dash because of a coach’s decision. Kone had qualified third in the prelims with a time of 6.80.

Matt White earned a personal best of 1:54.9 and finished fifth in the 800.

Also Saturday: Erskine Academy graduate Nick Grady had three RBIs and scored twice, while Gardiner Area High School graduate Forrest Chadwick had a double, drove in two runs and scored twice as the University of Southern Maine baseball team opened its season with a 14-1 win over Mt. Saint Mary in Yaphank, N.Y. Also for USM, Messalonskee graduate Sam Dexter scored a run and fellow Messalonskee graduate Nate Veilleux pitched a scoreles inning of relief. … Messalonskee graduate Samantha Mathieu was part of the University of Maine women’s swimming team’s 200-yard freestyle relay team that finished fourth at the ECAC championships on Friday in Cambridge, Mass. She was joined by Jenn Trodden, Lauren Dwyer and Emily Buckowski on a team that finished in 1:37.24. … Waterville Senior High School graduate Nick Margitza finished third in the shot put with a throw of 46-10.25 at the Tufts Last Chance Meet. … Monmouth Academy graduate Kevin Desmond was part of the University of Southern Maine’s 4×400-meter relay team that set the school record at the ECAC championships in New York. Desmond was joined by Jeremy Collins, Daniel Webb and Parker Chipman on a team that finished in 3:18.76 to save .04 seconds off the record, which was set three years ago.
