WATERVILLE — Three first-year players combined for 35 points as the Colby College men’s basketball team beat Fisher College 70-63 on the first day of the Colby Men’s Basketball Classic on Friday at Wadsworth Gymnasium.
Ryan Jann and Patrick Stewart each had 12 points, while Luke Westernman had 11 for the Mules, who improve to 2-2 and advance to play Daniel Webster in the title game at 3 p.m. today.
Sam Nwadike scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half as Fisher (4-3) rallied to tie the game at 55 with 4 minutes, 28 seconds left to play. Stewart put the Mules up for good with a 3-pointer with 3:43 left.

Women’s basketball

Thomas 79, Green Mountain 75: Messalonskee graduate Megan Pelletier had 28 points, nine rebounds, five assists, four steals and a blocked shot as the Terriers won in Poultney, Vt.
Waterville graduate Jasmine Bishop added 10 points and five rebounds for Thomas (2-1), while Emilee Reynolds had 12 points and Elizabeth Goodall 10.
Sierra Pease had 37 points for Green Mountain (1-3) to lead all scorers.

Castleton 67, UM-Farmington 55: Tarryn Bolognani scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds as the Spartans beat the Beavers in a North Atlantic Conference game in Castleton, Vt.
Meghan O’Sullivan added 16 points for Castleton (5-0, 1-0 in the conference).
Mt. Abram graduate Kennie Norton had 15 points for UMF (0-5, 1-0 in the conference), while Messalonskee graduate Holly Oliver added 12.

Men’s hockey

Bowdoin 3, Colby 1: Robert Toczylowski scored two goals and Steve Messina had 21 saves to lead the Polar Bears in a NESCAC game Brunswick.
Daniel Weiniger also scored for Bowdoin (5-0-1), which led 2-0 after the first period.
Nick Lanza scored the lone goal for Colby (1-5-0). Cory McGrath had the assist.
Jordan Nathan had 26 saves for Colby.
