LOWELL — Top-ranked UMass-Lowell scored four unanswered goals, including two 20 seconds apart early in the third period, on its way to a 4-2 win over the University of Maine in the opening game of their best-of-three men’s Hockey East quarterfinal series Thursday.
The two teams meet again tonight and Maine must win to force the deciding Game 3, which would be played at 4 p.m. Sunday.
Maine took a 1-0 lead at 13:52 of the first period on a power-play goal by Jake Rutt. Devin Shore had an assist on the goal.
The River Hawks tied the game with 2:40 left in the second when Scott Wilson scored on the power play. Wilson beat Maine goalie Martin Ouellette with traffic in front of the net.
Wilson gave UMass-Lowell the lead about three minutes into the third period and the River Hawks pushed it to 3-1 when Joe Pedezare scored on a rebound just 21 seconds later.
Josh Holmstrom added a power-play goal with 13 minutes left for UMass-Lowell.
Shore scored with 47 seconds left for Maine.
UMass-Lowell outshot Maine 36-26. The Black Bears finished 2 for 6 on the power play. UMass-Lowell was 2 for 5.
Ouellette had 32 saves for Maine, while Connor Hellebuyck had 24 for UMass-Lowell.
Becker 5, Thomas 1: Sophomore Faith Robinson allowed one earned run in six inning of work, but took the loss as the Terriers lost their second game of the day, in Clermont, Fla.
Thomas also lost to FDU-Florham 4-0 earlier in the day.
In the second game, Janelle Ciomei drove in the lone run for Thomas.
Also Thursday: Cony High School graduate Cassie Diplock had four goals and an assist in the St. Joseph women’s lacrosse team’s 17-7 loss to the University of Southern Maine in Gorham. ... Mary Lewis of Gardiner went 3 for 5 with two runs scored and two stolen bases in the Bates College softball team’s 6-5 win over Lesley University in Clermont, Fla. She added two hits, a walk, a run scored and two steals in a 4-3 loss to Salve Regina later in the day. ... Messalonskee graduate Dylan Foster had a double and scored a run as the Husson College baseball team beat Keene State College 4-2 in Avon Park, Fla.
