High school fans and athletes awoke to a snowy reminder Wednesday morning that spring in Maine is predictably unpredictable.

Although the snow had melted by day’s end, the rain that preceded it put a damper on several season-opening events scheduled for Thursday.

Track meets at Cony and Skowhegan were postponed due to wet infields while three boys lacrosse games — Cony at Oxford Hills, Edward Little at Messalonskee and Mt. Blue at Maranacook/Winthrop — were also postponed.

“We’re looking for a turf field right now to see if we can make it up in a couple of days,” Maranacook athletic director Al MacGregor said.

Others have already secured games on turf. Oxford Hills will play host to Cony at 8:30 a.m. Saturday at Kents Hill while Messalonskee’s game will be played at Thomas College at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday.

Two lacrosse games remain on Thursday’s schedule. The Oak Hill at St. Dominic boys game has been moved to the turf at Bates Colleges at 6:30 p.m. And the Gardiner at Camden Hills girls game is still on. A few teams will attempt to brave the cold and wind Thursday although a couple of matches have been moved.

The Cony boys will host Messalonskee Thursday while the girls match between the two teams in Oakland has been postponed. Matches between Skowhegan and Mt. Blue boys and girls team have both been moved. The girls will play at Kineowatha Park in Wilton while the boys match will be played at the Hippach Field complex in Farmington.

Both Cony athletic director Paul Vachon and Skowhegan AD Don Finley said their tracks are clear and ready to be run upon, but the infields are too wet to allow field events. Cony’s meet, that includes Gardiner, Maranacook, Mt. Blue and Winslow, has been rescheduled to April 29. Skowhegan, which was scheduled to host Lawrence, Maine Central Institute and Nokomis, will try to go in the next couple of days.

“We’ve moved it to Friday,” Finley said. “(Today) we’re going to decide if we’re going to move it to Saturday.”

Vachon said exhibition baseball and softball games are scheduled on Augusta fields the next three days and hopes they’ll all get played.

“We don’t cancel right now until the last minute,” he said. “We go day to day.”

Although most baseball and softball teams don’t begin their regular-season schedule until next Wednesday, Hall-Dale and Oak Hill are scheduled to open in Farmingdale on Friday.

“Until (Wednesday) we were 90 percent sure,” Hall-Dale athletic director Tim Johnson said. “We would need (Today) to be a huge drying day and Friday to be a good day. The snow didn’t do anything, it was the rain before the snow.”

Hall-Dale’s softball team is ready for play while the baseball field is still wet. At Oak Hill, the opposite is true.

“We might do softball at his place and baseball at ours,” Oak Hill AD Jim Palmer said. “We’re going to talk about it (Thursday).”
