NORTH ANSON — There are good days. There are great days. Then there are the wonderful, everything-seems-to-go-your-way days. The Carrabec girls basketball team had one of those Thursday night.

The Cobras scored the game’s first 37 points, and seemed to succeed no matter what combination of players they put on the floor. Carrabec defeated an overmatched Winthrop team, 59-10.

“They played their best game, right there,” Carrabec coach Skip Rugh said. “Mistake-free, is what it was. I just liked the ball movement, and the way they ran the offense, and their aggressiveness.”

Winthrop (0-6) is playing without its top two guards — Jess Scott (out for the season with a torn ACL) and Cat Ouellette (illness). The Ramblers turned the ball over on their first seven possessions. Through three quarters, they were 0-for-18 from the floor, with 34 turnovers.

“No excuse, you’ve got to play with what’s there,” Winthrop coach Lonney Steeves said. “Cat makes us a lot better, because she can break down defenses. She can get our offenses started, which is what we struggled with tonight, just getting started.”

Carrabec (3-4) scored 16 points in the final three minutes of the first quarter to lead 26-0. Eight different players scored in the first quarter for the Cobras, and Rugh called off the full-court press before the quarter was over.

Nearly everybody got in on the scoring. Emma Pluntke and Brooklynne Lewis had eight points apiece, and freshmen Kate Stevens and Liberty Chestnut each had six off the bench. Carrabec’s lead got to 37-0 before Winthrop’s Shauna Carlson made a free throw with 59.1 seconds left in the first half. The score was 55-2 after three quarters.

“They’re young, and we’re growing,” Steeves said. “Tonight was a kick in the teeth. Carrabec didn’t do anything wrong. They got uncontested layups half the night. Those are things we’ve got to get better at. This is a tough league to get experience in.”

The Winthrop players, especially Carlson, were hustling, but nothing was going right. In contrast, Carrabec has a legitimate shot at the postseason after winning four games all of last season.

“I think we really have an opportunity to make it to the playoffs this year,” senior guard Megan Cole said. “We’re a lot happier than we were. We have more confidence. We’re working together better. It’s really awesome.”
