AMHERST, Mass. — The University of Maine men’s hockey team jumped out to a two-goal lead, but had to settle for a 2-2 tie in a Hockey East game against UMass on Friday night.

Maine (3-6-2, 3-5-1 in Hockey East) took a 1-0 lead just 4 minutes, 55 seconds into the game with a power-play goal by Mark Anthoine, who was assisted by Kyle Beattie. The Black Bears pushed their lead to 2-0 at 12:49 when Brian Flynn got a pass from Spencer Abbott and fired the puck past UMass goalie Jeff Teglia.

UMass got within a goal at 11:11 of the second period when Michael Perreira fired in a rebound of a shot by Eric Filiou. Steven Guzzo tied the game at 5:09 of the third period when he scored on a rebound of a shot by Pereira.

UMass outshot Maine 37-31. Dan Sullivan had 35 saves for the Black Bears, while Teglia made 29 for UMass (4-4-3, 2-4-3 in the conference).

USM 83, UMaine-Fort Kent 43: Nicole Garland led four players in double figures with 13 points as the Huskies won at the 2011 UMaine-Farmington Dunkin’ Donuts Tip-Off Tournament.

Erin McNamara, Haley Jordan and Jordan Grant each added 10 points for the Huskies (1-1) while Fort Kent’s Jenn Colpitts led all scorers with 20 points.

The tournament resumes today in Farmington with USM facing UMaine Presque Isle at 1 p.m. followed  Fort Kent and UMaine-Farmington.

UM-Farmington 54, UMPI 47: Lindsay Ranquist scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds to lead the University of Maine at Farmington to a comeback win over the University of Maine at Presque Isle in the Dunkin’ Donuts Tip-Off Tournament on Friday.

The Beavers outscored UMPI 35-21 in the second half to pull out the win. Presque Isle’s Rashell Saucier led all scorers with 23 points.

Kelsey Graffam grabbed eight rebounds for the Beavers.

Women’s hockey

Middlebury 3, Colby 2, OT: Brianne Wheeler made 56 saves for the Mules, who lost in overtime in their season opener, in Waterville.

Wheeler made 38 saves in the first two period, and 16 in the third, for Colby.

Maggie Melberg scored the game-winner 1:57 into overtime for Middlebury.

Meredith Reynolds and Annie Papadellis scored for Colby.

Heather Marrison and Sara Ugalde scored for Middlebury.

Men’s basketball

Bowdoin 72, UM-Farmington 38: Bowdoin made 8 of 17 3-pointers to take the win over the Beavers in a tournament at UMass-Dartmouth.

Bowdoin (1-0) led 44-11 at the half. Will Hanley had 19 points and nine rebounds for the Polar Bears.
Joe McCloskey led UMF (0-2) with 12 points, as the Beavers were just 14-of -62 from the field.
