CLASS B NORDIC SKIING: Maranacook boys finish 2nd, girls 3rd

Ethan Harriman took out fourth while Luca DeAngelis finished fifth for the Black Bears.

The Maranacook boys turned in a strong showing, finishing second at Friday’s State Class B Nordic freestyle race at the Sugarloaf Outdoor Center while the Black Bears girls team placed third. The Yarmouth boys and girls, who won the Classical races on Thursday, won both overall Nordic titles,

Yarmouth’s Carter Hall led a 1-2-3 finish for the Clippers in the boys race while Maranacook’s Ethan Harriman took fourth and Luca DeAngelis fifth. Jason Stevenson (12th), Colby Watts (14) and Austin Landry (16) rounded out the top five for the Black Bears.

“We were awesome,” Maranacook coach Steve DeAngelis said of his boys team. “I knew going in Yarmouth is the best boys and girls team in the state regardless of class. I couldn’t be any happier. We skied great. Unfortunately, you can’t play defense in skiing.”

The Yarmouth boys scored 34 points while Maranacook scored 63 and Freeport 128. Thomas Farraday led sixth-place Mt. Abram by finishing eighth while teammate Vernon Romanoski placed 25th.

Kaelyn Woods of Gray New-Gloucester won the girls freestyle race while Yarmouth placed four skiers in spots 3-6. Kents Hill’s Anne McKee finished eighth while teammate Aimee Sala placed 14th, Yarmouth scored 49 points followed by Freeport with 89 and Maranacook with 136. Hannah Despres led the Black Bears in 12th place followed by Abigail Despres in 16th. Jaycee Greely (21), Taylor Cray (23) and Natalie Wicks (26) rounded out the top five. Reilly Romanoski led Mt. Abram in 25th place while teammate Hattie Rosenberg placed 40th.

“The girls skied OK,” DeAngelis said. “The thing about the girls is we don’t have any seniors and you can kind of see that part of it is just confidence.”

Alpine competition in all three classes will be held next week to determine overall state championships as well as individual winners in slalom and giant slalom and boys and girls skimeister titles.
