The Messalonskee indoor track and field teams concluded their regular season at a 12-team Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference meet Friday at Bowdoin College.

It couldn’t have gone any better for the Eagles, who swept the meet in impressive fashion to set themselves up as title contenders at the KVAC A meet Feb. 8 at the University of Southern Maine.

“We are done pretty early,” Messalonskee coach Scott Wilson said. “We are one of the earliest to get done. But we did very, very well in Brunswick, both the girls and the boys. I think we’ll be in the mix.”

The girls, led by Amanda Knight, won the meet with 119 points while perennial power Brunswick was second with 106. The Messalonskee boys finished with 115.5 points while Brunswick was second with 91.5.

Knight won the 55-meter dash (7.53 seconds), the 200 (27.60) and 400 (1:01.60). Soren Donisvitch won the long jump (19 feet, 7.5 inches), triple jump (41-10.25) and the pole vault (10-6). His brother, Jesse Donisvitch, won the 55 in 7.01 seconds.

“We had a good showing,” Wilson said. “We have a lot of kids who have had great years. We’re pretty excited. Right now we have three weeks to really work on technique and all the small stuff. We’re going to get better. We’ll have three weeks of training so we’ll end up racing faster and jumping farther at the KVAC meet.”

Erskine, like Messalonskee, is also in for a long wait as the regular-season schedule came to a close at Bowdoin.

The KVAC B championship meet is Feb. 8 at Bates College.

“We have some time off,” Erskine coach Dave Hickey said. “We’ve improved from meet to meet. We’ll just focus on our training.”

Wait and train. Train and wait.

The Eagles will have plenty of time to prepare for what they hope is a strong showing at the KVAC B meet.

Erskine competed in a 12-team meet at Bowdoin College on Friday.

The boys finished fourth while the girls came in sixth — strong finishes considering the meet featured KVAC A contenders Messalonskee, Brunswick, Lawrence and Mt. Ararat.

Jade Canak won the 55-meter hurdles (9.33 seconds) and long jump (15 feet, 9.5 inches). She was also second in the triple jump with a leap of 33-3. Erik Dodge won the 400 with a time of 55.22 to pace the boys.

“We have a lot of athletes who have a chance to medal at the KVACs and states.” Hickey said.

Prior to the season, Cony coach Peter Marsh said the objective this winter was to build a strong foundation for the outdoor season.

With just one conference meet remaining, Marsh said the Rams are on target.

“We’re in good position to enter the outdoor season,” he said. “I feel pretty confident with the outdoor season. We’ve had some steady progress.”

Cony won’t be in the mix to win conference or state titles because of low numbers, but Marsh is hopeful several athletes will make their mark.

Courtney King (200, 400), Elijah Tobey (shot put) and Connor Osborne (pole vault) all could place well at the KVAC A meet.

“Osborne has made tremendous leaps in the pole vault,” Marsh said. “He’s seen some great growth. It’s hard with these specialty events in indoor season, but he’s really set himself up for the outdoor season. Courtney and Elijah and have had strong seasons, too. They just continue to improve.”
