Trail etiquette key when pounding the pedals
GARDINER -- I hadn't been on a bicycle in years. In fact, it had been so long for me that when a friend asked if I wanted to hit the Kennebec River Rail Trail this week, my first stop on the way to the head of the trail was the basement of my parents' house.

DIF&W monitoring several species of birds
In the mid 1980s, the Maine Department of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife began to integrate non-game bird management throughout what was then referred to as the Migratory Bird Project. Before this time, the Department's accomplishments in bird conservation focused on waterfowl and American woodcock research and management, and marine wildlife studies.

Fun weekend away
OXFORD -- Sporting a black Coca-Cola cap, a two-day beard, a well-worn Zoo York T-shirt and a pair of blue jeans, Kevin Harvick talked about why he wanted to race in Sunday's TD Banknorth 250 at Oxford Plains Speedway.

BY REX TURNER : Can't visit the North Pole? Get a feel for it at Eagle Island
There's something magical in the simplicity that the moon is always with you. Surely, it may be shrouded by clouds or minimized by its phase, but it is always there. That constancy, coupled with the romance and allure a bright moon on a clear night, makes an imprint, which for me at least, reminds me of nights spent in memorable settings.

BY KEN ALLEN : Parasitic lampreys generate much talk
Wherever sports folks meet in person or on the Internet, dam removal on Maine's coastal rivers occasionally generates conversations about sea lampreys -- a parasitic fish that looks like a creature from a horror flick.

HOOPS TOURNEY VIDEO

Pressed for time? Watch two basketball games in about a minute. KJ photographer Joe Phelan set up a digital still camera to automatically make a frame every thirty seconds from the radio booths high above the Augusta Civic Center court. Over the course of the afternoon session it took almost 500 pictures. Then with the help of some computer software we compressed two boys games from the MPA Class C West bracket - Traip vs. Hall-Dale and Winthrop vs. Hyde - into a one minute, 12 second movie.
