Vote to protectMainers' voting rights

Morning Sentinel Staff

The secretary of state has certified the signatures that were collected for the people's veto to protect voting rights. Republican legislators who proposed and voted for the bill eliminating same-day voter registration are still pushing this issue and attacking the coalition, calling them extreme left-wing activists and fringe left-wing groups, hoping to distract mainstream Mainers away from the real issue.

The real issue is that election day registration has worked in Maine for nearly 40 years. There's absolutely no reason to eliminate it.

Maine's town clerks association fought against eliminating election day registration. And real Maine people from all over the state joined together for this cause in a grass-roots campaign that we can only hope will be successful in restoring our rights.

I encourage Mainers to vote yes in November to protect our voting rights.
