No local tax money used in Bailey Library repairs

The original slate roof was installed when Bailey Library in Winthrop was built in 1916.

The library's inclusion on the National Historic Registry requires that any repairs must not alter the building's character in any way so a new slate roof with copper trim and downspouts had to be installed. At the same time, we discovered the Reading Room lacked some insulation, and it was added.

"Who paid for these repairs?" The trustees obtained a grant from the state, which paid for a part of the cost. The rest came from the library's endowment fund, left to the Bailey Library in wills or in memory of various patrons, which has been accumulating over the years.

No local tax money was used to pay for these repairs.

I hope this information will clarify any questions the residents of Winthrop may have.
