Is Maine dying financially? Our children are looking at limited jobs when they graduate, industry is disappearing, education is suffering, more and more people are on welfare or are moving out of state.
Welfare is a huge problem in Maine. If the amount of time spent working the system, was spent being gainfully employed, there wouldn't be such a huge problem. One big problem is the fact that people only have to reside in Maine for one day before they file for benefits. How do we change generations of people who live by working the system? Careful, thoughtful welfare reform is necessary and needed soon.
Maine needs jobs! We need changes to encourage the small businessman. The next casino vote that comes up will be a resounding "yes" vote from our household. It should not be specifically for our Native American citizens. I do believe the location should be in that area though.
If casinos were built in the more poor counties or at least nearby, travel would most likely bring money to them. Southern Maine wanted/wants to be their own state, as they more than likely feel they are paying for the rest of the state's expenses. We need year-round tourism and trade.
Yes, it might mean more crime and invasion of the wild areas of Maine. I am not immune to that outcry as my children are serious environmentalists, and I love living in Maine, too. But, without income, the wildlife may just be here in Maine alone.
