U.S. 'in no way founded on the Christian religion'

Kennebec Journal Staff

The United States of America was in no way founded on the Christian religion.

Let that sink in a moment. That is a quote from President John Adams as written into the Treaty of Tripoli. Now in case you are about to say he is just one man and was obviously wrong, the Treaty of Tripoli was voted into law unanimously by both the Congress and the Senate.

Thomas Jefferson was very clear about the separation of church and state and for good reason. Without freedom of all religion, there is no freedom of any religion.

So people can believe in what faith they choose, but they should stop trying to rewrite our history. Our Founding Fathers did quite well with their version.

I think we need no further proof that Jefferson hit the nail on the head than to listen to today's "paper Christians" as they condemn those around them while claiming to have God's ear. I wish these people would walk the walk in the real sense of the Bible's teachings.
