Two comments on two letters in four parts

Two comments on two different letters:

1) In Daniel Williams' letter July 14, he says, "The legislators and the governor both got it right and once again, the people's veto got it wrong."

If you want your officials to think for you and pass laws telling you what you can and cannot do, move to a communist country. America is a democracy. In a democracy the majority rules and the elected officials are expected to vote the people's will. When they don't, we have two options available to us. The people's veto being one of them. The people's veto is a lot of work. We are fortunate there are people who will undertake this huge commitment. The other option is our vote. If they don't get it, vote them out.

2) In reference to John Stevens' letter July 15, he says, "Is there a reasonable explanation why they are dressed in full camo gear or are they snipers who needed the camouflage to get close enough to 'take down' the victim"? Yes, there is a very reasonable explanation.

A. The tactical team was called after the shooting.

B. Their purpose is never to "take down" a person. Their job is to defuse a situation and to protect people while also trying to stay safe themselves -- hence the camo. They were risking their lives to comb through the woods to search for a possible second shooter to protect others from harm.

Some tactical team members are also veterans. The last thing they want to do is shoot a veteran. Soldiers and police officers are just ordinary people doing extraordinary jobs. This was a sad, sad, situation. Let's not make it worse by applying blame where it does not belong.
