It was with very little surprise that I read Pat Truman's letter (March 12) about the Maine Human Rights Commission and their transgender guidelines. Her dogma has not changed one iota in the last half-century. If there were no such things as abortion and homosexuality, she would be without purpose.
She seems to have missed the "Human Rights" part of the commission's title as she's still asking whom the guidelines serve. Since she does not see transgendered people as valid human beings, she thinks they have no rights.
Just substitute any minority for "transgender," and you clearly see the bigotry. If she were really interested in the "good of Maine schoolchildren" she would have us educate them with an understanding that the world is made up of all kinds of people. And though they may not accept these different folks, they ought to respect them as human beings and fellow citizens.
With "onerous, dim-witted" logic she thinks minority rights should be ignored since there is no "groundswell of support." In this same vein, she's convinced the safety of children will be jeopardized by these guidelines.
As Truman makes fun of Gay and Lesbian Advocates and Defenders (GLAD), she reminds us where influences on bullies comes from.
I used to get angry at these hate-filled rants, but now I get busy -- busy not letting this self-imposed ignorance go unanswered.
