Importance of character when deciding on vote


A person’s character is important to me in deciding who to give my vote, whether town selectmen or president.

To gain my vote in the upcoming gubernatorial election, I would need to be able to trust a candidate to put what is in the best interest of Maine’s residents first.

Paul LePage has been very clear he intends to abolish most of Maine’s environmental laws and regulations. The Department of Environmental Protection would be staffed with only officials pre-approved by industry. He illustrates his view the DEP and Maine’s environmental laws are a major impediment to economic activity, and therefore should be eliminated, with a frequently repeated story. He says that when running a peat-fired energy plant in Washington County for the bank that foreclosed, he was presumably asked by the DEP to “count buffalo and black flies” to get a needed permit.

This turns out to be a total fabrication on the part of LePage as a recent investigation by Maine Public Radio has revealed. How many tall tales is LePage telling voters?

A candidate who will make up facts to support a preconceived position rather than on an objective evaluation of what is best for Maine is not someone who I would trust as governor.

I definitely know who I will not be voting for. Now, if I can only figure out whom I will vote for.
