Lawmakers should reply to email about helmets

Letter to the Editor

On Feb. 3, I emailed all 13 members of the Legislature's Transportation Committee in regards to L.D. 66, An Act to Require that Motorcyclists Wear Helmets.

Two of the 13 gave me a response. It took six days for Sen. Edward Mazurek, D-Rockland, to reply: "Thank you for your input." It took seven days for Rep. Arthur Verow, D-Brewer, to reply: "Thank you for the e-mail on this important matter."

Only two out of 13. Really? What are these people doing in Augusta?

On Jan. 23, I contacted my representative, Republican Larry Dunphy of Embden, and received no response.

I am curious about the fact that the constituents don't get acknowledged when they contact the senators and representatives in Augusta. Isn't that why they are in Augusta? To represent the people of this state? Do they not have any regard for my opinion?

I find it insulting not to be acknowledged. If they don't want to hear from the public or represent the public. then they should probably go home and stay home.

Also, it is time for the bill's sponsor, Rep. Paulette Beaudoin, D-Biddeford, to find something else to focus on. She introduced this same bill in 2009 when it was shot down. It seems to me she is a hater of motorcyclists. Why waste time and money on this again?

Aren't there more important things to focus on in Augusta? How about the budget? Or welfare reform?

In closing, "Let those who ride decide."
