KJ photographers' good work makes my day

Letter to the Editor

Back in the good old days of the Kennebec Journal's yesteryears, I was privileged to be one of the reporters/photographers -- the best darn job I ever held.

I could not wait to roll out of bed in the morning and head down to the old KJ building on Willow Street.

Not only did I get to see my byline or photo credit in the paper each morning, I got to work with some remarkably talented editors, reporters and photographers, who taught me just about everything there was to know about covering stories and making pictures.

Paul Plummer was the general manager. My editors were Paul McCann and Ray Seigler. I shared a newsroom clattering with noisy typewriters and telephones with the likes of political writer Peter Damborg, sports editor "Doggy" Marriner and photojournalists Betty Potter, Walker Leighton, Clarence "Scoop" McKay, Bruce Nett, Barney Roach and Roland LaValle.

Those guys were good, but let me hasten to add: The Kennebec Journal today is blessed with two totally terrific photographers -- Joe Phelan and Andy Molloy. They not only produce beautiful photographs, they seem to find a way to be on location when a photo-op arises.

Keep up the good work. It helps to make my day.
