Hamas committed to destruction of Israel

James Silin seems to be a bit naive when he suggested, in his letter ("Support Hagel, even with his poor choice of words," Jan. 18), that Israel should negotiate with Hamas.

How can Israel negotiate with the terrorist organization Hamas when, in its charter, it is committed to the destruction of the state of Israel?

Such a suggestion would be like asking the United States to negotiate with al-Qaida. Just as al-Qaida has attacked the United States, Hamas has fired almost 8,000 rockets against civilian targets in Israel.
