Food stamp cards should buy only food for needy

Letter to the Editor

I agree with Gov. Paul LePage and Sen. Roger Katz regarding their effort to remove junk food and soda from the list of "foods" that can be bought with the food stamp cards.

More importantly, however, did they not read the recent letter to the editor regarding the use of these cards to buy beer, cigarettes and lottery tickets? This fraud should be investigated and prosecuted.

Our tax dollars should not be wasted in this way, ever. All employers should remind their employees that this behavior will not be tolerated.

Food stamp money is to buy food for people who need it. Many people are going without while others cheat. We should all be aware of this and report any offense that we witness.
