WINTHROP — Eight people were taken to the hospital Thursday night after three cars crashed on U.S. Route 202.

Drivers Susan Chandonnet, 55, of Lewiston, and Kayla Grant, 20, of Auburn, as well as three passengers in each of their vehicles, were taken to the hospital with what were believed to be non-life threatening injuries, police said.

One of the passengers in Grant’s car was a toddler, police said.

The crash occurred around 6 p.m. as Grant, driving a 1999 Honda, followed a 2003 Volkswagen being driven by Chandonnet, east on U.S. 202.

Chandonnet slowed to make a turn near the Alden Road intersection. Grant, who couldn’t slow down in time, swerved to the left, but her car still hit the Volkswagen, police said. Grant’s Honda continued into the westbound lane, where it hit a 2007 GMC pickup being driven by 44-year-old Brenda Ross, of Winthrop, police said.

Winthrop rescue called for ambulance from Monmouth and Augusta to help take the the injured to the hospital. Radio reports indicated all the patients were taken to Central Maine Medical Center in Lewiston.

The investigation into the accident is ongoing, police said.
