Waterville councilors consider suspending stormwater payments on Tuesday

WATERVILLE -- Councilors Tuesday will consider withholding payment of stormwater treatment fees to the Waterville Sewerage District.

The meeting will be at 7 p.m. in the council chambers at The Center downtown.

If councilors approve the resolution to withhold payment, the bill would be submitted to a court for a decision regarding the legitimacy of the fees to the city, according to the resolution.

Last year, the city paid $271,000 in stormwater fees, but the city maintains it does not do anything to influence, control or direct the flow of stormwater into the system.

Councilors also will consider authorizing City Manager Michael Roy to enter into an agreement with Fairfield for the services of the city's police chief or deputy police chief, from March 1 to June 30. Fairfield's police chief, John Emery, resigned last week.

In other matters, the council will consider supporting legislation creating a natural gas district.

Councilors also will vote whether to request the state Legislature approve a biennial state budget that prevents significant increase in property taxes.

Also on the agenda is a request to change the zoning on two lots on Kennedy Memorial Drive and Carver Street.
