WATERVILLE -- An Oakland man lost control of his van and drove into a wooded area after apparently losing consciousness Wednesday afternoon on Kennedy Memorial Drive, police said.
The van's driver, Horace Crawford, destroyed a fire hydrant and hit a sewer cap before stopping about 30 feet from the roadside near Shaw's Plaza, according to Waterville police Sgt. Dan Goss.
Crawford was not injured, Goss said, but was taken to Inland Hospital because the accident, which happened at roughly 12:45 p.m., resulted from medical distress
The damage to the fire hydrant was estimated to be $6,000, while it had not yet been determined on Wednesday afternoon whether the sewer cap and the underlying water system were damaged.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
