WINTHROP -- Town Council on Monday will review three choices for repairing a collapsed damaged culvert that has cut off through traffic on Turtle Run Road in East Winthrop.

COLLAPSE: The Winthrop Town Council will review three choices on Monday for repairing a collapsed culvert that has cut off through-traffic on Turtle Run Road in East Winthrop. The culvert carries water from Little Cobbossee Lake and Lake Cobbossee.

Town Manager Cornell Knight said councilors have three repair options.
The latest option is installation of a concrete precast bridge designed by Coffin Engineering. At an estimated $38,000, it is the costliest option. Designers recommended $40,000 to $50,000 be budgeted for this opton project, Knight said.
The fix would restore the roadway for vehicle travel as will the second, less expensive option: installing two 30-inch culverts to replace the failed culvert.
"It's better than what's there now, but less flow than putting a bridge in," Knight said.
Knight said he is recommending this option.
Cobbossee Watershed District has agreed to pay $3,000 toward either the bridge or culverts if the flow can be increased, which would lower water levels in Little Cobbossee Lake and a swampy area near the culvert.
At an estimated $600, the third option is the least expensive. It would essentially widen the culvert area and calls for the installation of foot bridge. The road would then be closed to through traffic. The only cost would be for materials; work would be done by the town's public works crew.
Turtle Run Road is a short lane that forms an arc connecting to U.S. Route 202 at each end. It is the main access to condominiums that border Cobbossee Lake and Lakeside Motel & Marina. A public boat landing is at the other end of Turtle Run Road.
The granite block culvert collapsed last winter.
The special meeting is set for 7 p.m. at the Town Office.
