AUGUSTA -- A fatal shooting inside a State Street apartment Monday is an apparent suicide, police said.
Augusta police Detective Sgt. Matthew Clark offered no additional details about the investigation but confirmed that police did not believe the death was suspicious.
The body was found inside an apartment building at 20 State St. shortly after 11 a.m., according to police. The victim was found by a brother, according to a family member at the scene. The family member confirmed the victim died of a gunshot wound inside the victim's apartment.
Several officers from Augusta and Maine State Police converged on the area of the apartment after initial reports indicated a fatal shooting had occurred.
Northbound traffic was diverted off State Street for several blocks around the building as police investigated for approximately an hour.
Augusta Public Works crews were called to lay down a layer of sand on the slippery sidewalk and parking lots near the building.
The building is the one where Raymond Leslie Clark strangled Audrey Lou Benn in February 2008, according to Kennebec Journal archives. Clark is serving a 40-year prison sentence for that crime.
The building's owner is listed as John Pedersen.
