AUGUSTA -- A fire at a house on Spring Road was extinguished quickly Friday but not before causing significant damage.

The Augusta Fire Department, assisted by firefighters from Togus, Chelsea and Gardiner, responded at 12:20 p.m. to a call about the blaze at 283 Spring Road.
Firefighters put out the fire within 15 or 20 minutes. The 1 1/2 story house had little visible damage to its front or sides, but Augusta Fire Chief Roger Audette said there was extensive smoke and water damage inside.
No one was home when the fire started, and firefighters waited for owners Norman Nelson Jr. and Rebecca Westfall to return after it was extinguished.
Audette said he did not know what caused the fire or where it started. The department requested help in the investigation from the Office of the State Fire Marshal.
Nothing immediately appeared suspicious about the fire on Friday afternoon, Fire Marshal Joseph Thomas said.
According to Augusta's online assessment database, Nelson and Westfall bought the 1,188-square-foot home in 2006.
