Special town meeting Saturday in Litchfield

Kennebec Journal Staff

LITCHFIELD -- Selectmen have set a special town meeting 9 a.m. Saturday so residents can resolve three sticky land situations and appropriate $7,000 for a local match to buy a new truck for the Fire Department.

Residents will be asked to authorize selectmen to create a one-acre, nonconforming lot containing Litchfield Academy, to allow the board to take action, if necessary, to turn over school real estate assets to the regional school unit.

Litchfield Academy is adjacent to Libby-Tozier Elementary School.

Voters also will be asked to establish a Litchfield Board of Assessment Review to handle appeals when abatements are denied.

Currently, such appeals go directly to Kennebec County commissioners.

This would take effect 90 days after approval.

Selectmen also want authorization to create a special exception to the ordinance dealing with the sale of tax-foreclosed property, to limit bidders for two tax-acquired beach lots to those who own property in Peace Pipe Shores or to the Peace Pipe Shore Road Owners Association.

Any future conveyance also would be restricted to Peace Pipe Shores property owners.

And voters also may choose to appropriate up to $7,000 as local match for a $125,000 Homeland Security grant for a light brush attack truck.

The meeting will be in the Town Office, Hallowell-Litchfield Road.
