Belgrade woman injured in crash on Route 8

BELGRADE — A local woman was injured Friday when her car skidded off the road and hit a rock on Route 8.

Cheryl Luther, 44, had to be cut from her car before she was taken to MaineGeneral Medical Center’s Thayer Unit with what police described as significant but non life-threatening injuries. A spokesman said Luther had been released from the hospital by Tuesday afternoon.

The crash occurred around 3:30 p.m. as Luther was driving her 2007 Toyota Camry on snow-covered Route 8 near the McGrath Pond Road. State Police Sgt. Aaron Hayden said in a release that Luther was unable to make a corner and her car veered off the road and hit large rock, which caused it to roll.

“The vehicle came to rest on its side against some trees,” Hayden said.

Rescue crews from Oakland and Belgrade had to cut Luther from her car. She was in and out of consciousness, Hayden said.

Dresden man charged with drug trafficking

ROCKLAND — A Dresden man faces drug trafficking charges after he was arrested Tuesday while boarding a ferry for Vinalhaven with thousands of dollars worth of Oxycodone.

Joseph Dupaw, 68, was charged with trafficking and violating conditions of release, said Department of Public Safety spokesman Steve McCausland.

Andrew Goupil, 33, of Wiscasset, was arrested at the same time and charged with aggravated trafficking. Goupil has two prior drug convictions, McCausland said.

Dupaw was indicted by a Lincoln County grand jury in last month with aggravated assault and aggravated criminal threatening stemming from a Dec. 18, 2012, incident in Wiscasset.

Dupaw and Goupil were carrying 200 Oxycodone pills and $1,550 at the time of their arrest as they were preparing to board the Vinalhaven ferry, McCausland said. The street value of prescription pills is about $7,000.

Maine Drug Enforcement Agents believe Dupaw and Goupil have been selling hundreds of Oxycodone pills in Lincoln and Knox counties for several months, McCausland said. Both have been under investigation by multiple agencies for months.
